UNDP and EU continue to support the Agency for Regional Development of Crimea

The management council for coordination and increasing effectiveness of the Agency for Regional Development of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea will be established until the end of October 2011 in Crimea.

This was reported by Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the ARC - Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the ARC - Ekaterina Yurchenko during a meeting with representatives of the UN Development Program.

The meeting was attended by UN System Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine - Olivier Adam, the head of UNDP Office in Crimea - Adeline Gonay and Manager of the "Agency for Regional Development Support Project" - Daniel Sepic.

Currently, the council structure is under development. The format of work and authorities are to be determined in the nearest future. It is planned that it will include representatives of Crimean ministries involved in regional development and investment attraction and NGO members. The main task of the council will be assisting the agency in matters of regional development.

Ekaterina Yurchenko noted that the agency has made significant progress in attracting investment in Crimea and in raising a level of confidence in the autonomy among investors for the last six months.

Vice Prime Minister also stressed that the Council of Ministers of the ARC and the Agency for Regional Development of the ARC continue to work in that direction in accordance with the Strategy for social and economic development of the ARC until 2020.

Olivier Adam thanked the Government of Crimea for their support to the agency, expressed his satisfaction with its work and noted that UNDP will assist in attracting the international technical assistance to the agency.

For reference: The management council under the Agency for Regional Development is being created on recommendation of EU/UNDP project "Support for the Agency for Regional Development of the ARC". The Council will work on ongoing basis and will implement overall coordination activities. The question on inclusion in the council of representatives of one of the leading universities, a bank, the Chamber of Commerce of Crimea and mayors of several towns is under discussion.
